Lhasa Barkhor Street and Tromzikhang Market Reopens after Jokhang Fire

Life-Sized Statue of Buddha Sakyamuni in Jokhang Temple when he was 12 years old.BARKHOR Street and the bustling Tromzikhang Market in the heart of Lhasa, capital city of Tibet Autonomous Region in west China, was reopened to the public on Sunday after a temporary closure following a fire in Jokhang Temple.
The fire broke out at 6:40pm on Saturday, but was soon put out and no casualties reported. Jokhang Temple will be closed from February 19 to 22 as scheduled, when its monks mark the New Year holiday. Tibetan New Year - Losar was celebrated last Friday, coinciding with the Spring Festival this year.
Jokhang Temple, with a history of more than 1,300 years, is renowned in Tibetan Buddhism, houses many cultural treasures, including a life-sized statue of the Sakyamuni Buddha when he was 12 years old.
