Chengdu Travel Guide

Chengdu, (Rong for Short),capital city of Sichuan, is not only China's important industrial base, but also a well-know historical and cultural city in southwest china, with a history of 2,500 years. Chengdu is endowed with unique natural conditions and beautiful environment. It has a pleasant climate, and exquisite lush mountains. It's mountainous in the north-west area, with plains in the south-east area, and low hills in-between.

Chengdu, is abundant in tourist resources, such as Temple of Marquis Wu, a memorial shrine of the prime minister, Zhuge Liang of the Shu Kingdom (221-263A.D. ); Du Fu's Thatched Cottage, a monument to the Tang Dynasty(618-907 A.D)poet, Du Fu; In the vicinity of the city, there are a 2000-year-old water conservancy project, Dujiangyan Irrigation System, a Taoist mountain called Qingcheng Shan (Green-city mountain) and a Buddhist monastery called Baoguang Monastery. In addition, about 160 kilometers away from Chengdu lies the largest Buddha statue Leshan Giant Buddha and a Buddhist sacred mountain, Mt. Emei. All the historical sites and scenic spots are well worth a visit, not to say, the tea houses, the local cuisine and the traditional arts and crafts.

Chengdu Panda Base

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is situated on the Axe Hill 10 kilometers from the north suburb of Chengdu City. It covers an area of 600 acres.

The environment here is exquisitely designed; the air is refreshing with the bamboo growing luxuriantly and flocks of wild birds flying around.Here, you can visit our lovely friend, Pandas. In Autumn, new born babies will enter our world which you can see at the nursery house from August through the end of the year.

Temple of Marquis Wu

Located at Wuhou Avenue in south of Chengdu, Wuhou might be translated as 'Minister of War', and was the title given to Zhuge Liang, a famous military strategist of the Three Kingdoms Period (220-80 AD) immortalised in one of the classics of Chinese literature, The Tale of the Three Kingdoms.

Temple of Marquis Wu was first built many years ago at the end of Shu. It has been damaged and removed for many times. And it has been over 1500 years old now. If you are interested in Chinese literature, Temple of Marquis Wu could not be missed.

Du Fu's Thatched Cottage

The Du Fu's Thatched Cottage is located at the side of western suburbs of Chengdu. It was the residence of the great poet Dufu of Tang Dynasty when he took refuge in Chengdu. In the year 759AD, at the age of 47, compelled by poverty and social upheal, he moved to the outskirts of Chengdu and built a thatched hut. During his stay of nearly 4 years, he composed more than 240 poems reflecting the misery of people.

The cottage covers an area of 16 hectares. Constructions inside represent Qing Dynasty style, with gardens of the unique compound style in Chinese gardening tradition.

Dujiangyan Irrigation System

Dujianyang Irrigation system is a pearl in the water construction of ancient China. Began its construction in the 3rd century BC, and it continues to control the waters of the Minjiang river and distribute it to the fertile farmland of the Chengdu plains until now.

More than 2,000 years ago, the Mingjiang river flowed fast from the mountains. As it ran through the Chengdu plain, the agriculture frequently suffered a lot from the floods. After the irrigation is completed, the dam system automatically diverted Mingjiang River and channeled it into irrigation canals. Gradually, Chengdu plain tured into one of the most fertile land in China.

In the winter of 2000, Dujiang Irrigation System was placed on the World Culture Heritage list.

Leshan Giant Buddha

Leshan Giant Buddha, the largest stone sculpture of Buddha in the world, occupies the entire hillside.

According to records, the carving of this giant Buddha was begun in the first year of the reign of the Tang Emperor Xuanzong (713 AD), and completed in the 19th year of Emperor Dezong (803 AD), a total of 90 years.

Looking dignified and solemn, the Buddha measures 71 meters in height. His shoulders are 28 meters across. The head is 14.7 meters long and 10 meters broad with total 1021 buns of hair on it. Leshan Giant Buddha is therefore the tallest Buddha in the world and in 1996, it was added to the World Natural and Cultural Heritage List.

Mt. Emei

Lies in the southwestern area of Sichuan Basin, Mt. Emei is called the "Mountain of Brightness" in Buddhism. It is a sacred Buddhist site, and has a Buddhist history of over 1,500 years.

There are ten beautiful scenic spots on Emei. The sun, moon, clouds, snow, water, trees, bridges and temples in these places all compose their own unique and fantastic pictures. Its main peak is called the Golden Summit while the highest peak, Wanfoding summit is 3,099 meters above the sea level.

As a famous scenic spot and an important Buddhism mountain in China, UNESCO inscribed Mt. Emei in the World Natural Heritage list in 1996.

How to Get in?

Chengdu is the transportation hub of southeast China. It's quite convenient to go from here to your next destination.

By Plane

Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport is situated 20km outside of Chengdu city. It is one of the main air hubs in China. It has flights to most major cities in China and some international destinations including Amersterdan, HongKong, Bangkok, Singapore, and Tokyo.

By Train

Thre are two train stations in Chengdu, but the main for tourists in the North station, which is 8km north of Chengdu city. There are railway lines to Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Kunming, Xi'an and Lhasa etc.

By Road

There are several bus stations in Chengdu and they serve different destinations.

Best Time to Come

Due to its unique georaphy, basin inside and mountains around, Chengdu has the lovely weather for the whole year. It is suitable for travelling here no matter in summer or winter.
