Itinerary Day by Day
Day 01 Arrive in Lhasa
Today's highlights:
Acclimatize to the High Altitude.
Details:
Take flight into Lhasa. Local guide will meet you and transfer you to Lhasa. On the way, you can appreciate the heart-beating highland view along the Yarlong Tsangpo river (the longest river in Tibet and highest river on the earth with an average altitude of 4,000 meters), originating from Jiemayangzong Glacier on the northern Himalayas.
Day 02 Lhasa Tour
Today's highlights:
Potala Palace, Jokhang temple, Barkhor Street, Sera Monastery
Details:
Potala Palace: A palace originally built at this site in 637 by Songtsen Gampo, the massive palace was at one time the largest building in the world and remains a spectacular imposition to Lhasa's landscape today. It's hard to keep your eyes off the palace's many levels and hard not to wonder what went on in all those rooms (over a thousand) over the centuries. It was for hundreds of years a self-contained fortress of religious and political significance
Jokhang Temple: Lhasa's premier temple is considered the most sacred Buddhist building in all of Tibet. An impressive restoration in recent decades makes it almost impossible to detect what was built in this century and what has been there since 647, when Songtsen Gampo began building the site. The temple houses incredible statues and other works of art and all the regalia of Buddha worship. Pilgrims and monks are all over, chanting and prostrating, and while this may be overwhelming, the experience is inimitable anywhere else and is as authentic as it gets. Don't miss the views from the roof of the city of Lhasa and the Potala Palace in the distance.
Sera Monastery: Four kilometers north of Lhasa lies Sera Monastery, one of the three Gelugpa monasteries. It is here that the resident monks famously debate Buddhist doctrine in a highly stylized manor with ritualized clapping and stamping to designate starting and stopping points. During most afternoons (around 3:30), you can witness this fascinating procedure.
Day 03 Leave Lhasa for Shigatse via Gyantse
Today's highlights:
Yamdrok Yumtso, Karola Glacier, Pelkhor Chode,
Details:
Yamdrok Yumtso: One of the three largest, sacred lakes in Tibet, Lake Yamdroktso stretches 72 km (45 miles) long and lies 4,440 meters above sea level. With more than a dozen islands, this fan-shaped lake has long provided Tibetans with holy cleansing water to bathe and drink as well as a supply of freshwater fish commercially exploited by the local population. The lake's islands provide pastures to local herdsmen. The lake's bright blue color is framed in a backdrop of impressive snow-capped peaks and green valleys of fertile farmland, spotted with traditional Tibetan farmhouses. The lake is believed to be representative of a female guardian of Buddhism and has long time been a holy site of Tibetan pilgrimages.
Pelkhor Monastery: Southwest of Shigatse, in the small town of Gyantse, is the Pelkor Chode Monastery home to several hundred monks. The site is actually a collection of monasteries that were founded in 1418. There is a temple inside the complex with a large collection of unique Buddhist art inside and monks practicing their daily prayers and mantras. Although the monastery compound used to house many more monks than it does today the site is well maintained by the Gelugpa sect and the monks that still reside at the Pelkor Chode. The halls and chapels of the monastery are not lit so it's a good idea to bring a flashlight.
Day 04 Drive from Shigatse to Mt. Everest
Today's highlights:
Rongbuk Monastery, Mount Everest Base Camp
Details:
Rongbuk Monastery: Located at the foot of Mount Everest, Rongbuk has earned the title of the world's highest monastery standing at 4,980 meters high. It might go without saying, the views of Mount Everest from within are spectacular. The monastery, originally built in 1902 by Nyingma Lama, housed more than 500 monks but today, just 50 monks and nuns remain. It is now possible for travelers to stay at the monastery (the rooms are quite basic even bad) or pitch a tent outside. Located just two hours (by foot) from Everest Base Camp, the hike through the valleys and alongside the world's tallest mountain is a breathtaking and memorable hike. Or you can drive alongside hikers and arrive at Base Camp in about 15 minutes.
Day 05 Back to Shigatse from Everest
Today's highlights:
Sunrise of Mount Everest
Details:
Mount Everest: Bounded on the east by the deep gorge of the Bum-chu (Arun) River and on the west by that of the Matsang Tsangpo (Sunkosi) are some of the world's highest mountains of the East Himalayan range, forming a natural barrier between Tibet and Nepal. Clustered together in close proximity, there comprise: Makalu (8,463m), Lhotse (8,501m), Everest, known locally as Qomolangma or Jomo Gangkar (8,848m), Bumo Ritse (7,068m), Jowo Oyuk (8,153m), Jowo Guru or Menlungtse (7,181m), and Jowo Tseringma or Gauri Shangkar (7,148m). Thre are stunningly beautiful treks in the environs of each of there peaks, and among them, those around Mount Everest are particularly well known.
Day 06 Visit Tashilumpo then back to Lhasa
Today's highlights:
Tashilumpo Monastery
Details:
Tashilumpo Monastery: Traditionally home to the Panchen Lama, the monastery was built in 1447. Tashilumpo is large enough to seem like a small walled town, and there's plenty to see. Highlights include massive collections of jewels and gold Buddha statues, the Assembly Hall and its colorful unfurled thangkas, and the shrines and thrones of each of the Panchen Lamas, many of whom are buried on site.
Day 07 Bid farewell to Lhasa
Today's highlights:
Transfer from hotel in Tibet to airport or Lhasa Train Station, Say goodbye to Lhasa
