Xinjiang Travel Guide

Picture of Xinjiang Location MapXinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region is on the traditional Silk Road. Located in Northwest of China, the Mongolian Uplands. The northwestern border region of Xinjiang, lauded variously as a land of song and dance, melons and fruits, precious stones, and carpets, is situated in the heart of the Eurasia Continent. Xinjiang was a key link on the Silk Road and a hub for east-west cultural exchanges in ancient times. The local folklore is rich and varied. As everywhere in China, the official language is Mandarin. However, many other languages are spoken in Xinjiang. The most common is Uighur, related to Turkish.

Regions

According to its geographic position, Xinjiang can be divided into two parts, namely, the south Xinjiang and the north Xinjiang, with the famous Mountanin Tian range in the middle as a marker.

Urumqi

Urumqi is situated in a pocket of green on the north face of the Tian Shan (Heavenly Mountains) and surrounded by expansive grasslands, desert basins and rugged, snow-capped peaks. There are two major ethnic groups, the Han Chinese and the Uyghur, who can mostly speak Mandarin, albeit possibly with an accent, and Uyghur, a Turkic language.

Northern Xinjiang

Picture of Baisha Lake in Northern XinjiangA beautiful and romantic land of lakes, grassland, canyon and exotic landform. It stands for the places at the north side of Tianshan Mountian including Aletai, Tuwa Tribe, Kanas Lake, Keramay, Demon City, Sayram Lake, Yining, Narat Grassland and Bayanbulak Grassland. The journey is tough because a lot of the sights are uninhabited and lack of basic necessities like water and electricity. But whenever you come to see this land, you will know that the memory of Xinjiang will stay with you forever.

Southern Xinjiang

Picture of Tianshan Valley in Southern XinjiangThere are ethnic people and culture, bazaars etc to offer especially in Urumqi, Kuche and Kashgar etc. It stands for the cities and places at the south side of Tianshan Mountian including Urumqi, Kuerle/Korla, Kuche, Hotan, Turpan and Kashgar.

The south Xinjiang has a dry weather and severely lacks water, so the land there are lean and unproductive. The major people there are the Uighur minority. Taklamkan desert is the second largest mobile desert in the world and it's the origin of Xinjiang civilization.
